Identity: Part I
You are what you think and what you speak. Why? Because from the abundance of your heart, the mouth speaks. And when you open your mouth and say you're ugly, worthless, unlovable, and all those other degrading things, you believe it in your heart.
Sure, others say bad things about us, and we tend to believe them after hearing it for so long, but we don't have to. It's a choice we make. Every time.
What we really need to do is discover our identity in Father God.
We need to know and recognize who we are in Jesus Christ. Because once we know that, we are able to raise our shield of faith. And those fiery and poisonous darts others try to shoot at us bounce right off.
When we put on our helmet of salvation, knowing that Father sees us as clean and pure and holy, because He sees us through His Son, Jesus Christ, and the blood He shed that covers all of our filthiness ... when we stand before Him and He recognizes us as His child, adopted into His family ... the enemy can't so easily play with our minds and invade our thoughts with His condemnation. Because there is no condemnation in those who are in Christ Jesus.
Instead of saying you are ugly, worthless, unlovable say these things:
I am created in God's image. In His image He made me. I am (male if you're a boy) (female if you're a girl). Read Genesis 1:27.
I am worth more than rubies. Read Proverbs 31:10.
God loves me so much that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to die for my sins so that I could spend eternity with Him. I am truly loved with a love like no other. Read John 3:16-17.
Repeat these things over and over and over. And over and over. And over. Until you start believing them. Don't stop. Keep saying them. Because one day you'll wake up with a fresh revelation of who you are in Jesus. Who you are in God's eyes. What place you hold in His heart.
The power of life and death exists in your tongue. You should carefully consider what you're about to say before you let the words fly.
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.
For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
Romans 8:5-6
Change your stinking thinking about yourself. Set your mind on the things of the Spirit. What is God telling you? You can recognize His voice by the life and peace it brings. Even when it's a word of correction. Like a change in the way you think of yourself and others...
